Insufferable arrogance

Reputations take a life time to build, but are easily destroyed in a minute by the irresponsible conduct of people in power who know no law, except their whim. The fact that a bad or illegal order passed by an adjudicating authority is not visited with adverse consequences to the officer gives them supreme confidence to act arbitrarily. We all know too well what is the effect of "serious view" taken by the Board. Not even a fly has been hurt by the Board's serious views of misconduct of its officers. CBEC wants to sweep its own dirt under the carpet, and act holier-than-thou with the assessees. This conduct has been strengthened by the laid back governance style of the last ten years. Couple of days back, we have read about the grievance and lament of IRS officers' association about ill-treatment of an officer of their tribe in the hands of Assam Rifles. CBEC and its officers must remember to saying of Confucius, "Don't do unto others what you do not want others to do to you". This kind of selective blindness to the social standing of others would also demonstrate that the Prime Minister's act of pulling up and disciplining bureaucracy has not taken roots even New Delhi itself, much less in distant posts of the Central Government.
